Short Cycle Dispensing Summit | October 2010

The American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) and the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP) held a conference focused on Section 3310 of the health reform law - short cycle dispensing in the LTC domain. Presentations from the conference are listed below.

Advocate Fly-In | April 2010

In April 2010, LTCPA hosted 14 LTC pharmacy advocates to educate a core group of Congressional policymakers about concerns regarding the implementation of Section 3310 of the health reform legislation, which requires Medicare Part D Plans to implement the short cycle dispensing of medications in LTC settings. LTCPA advocates asked Congressional members to express concerns to CMS regarding (a) protecting patient safety and access in LTC setting and (b) not holding LTC pharmacies responsible for the tremendous financial burden associated with implementation of the new short cycle dispensing requirements.

Congressional Briefing | April 2010

LTCPA held a Congressional staff briefing entitled, “Patient Safety & Access to Medication Therapies in Long Term Care Settings". Approximately 20 individuals, in addition to LTCPA’s advocates, attended the event which featured the following speakers:

  • Mary Ann Griffin, Director of Aging Services for the City of Alexandria, VA
  • Tom Clark, Director of Clinical Affairs for the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP)
  • John Walker, Chief Operating Officer for Partners Pharmacy

LTCPA hosted a dinner for the advocates featuring Scott Schloegel, Chief of Staff to U.S. Representative Bart Stupak (D-MI), as the keynote speaker.

Advocate Fly-In | December 2009

In December 2009, LTCPA hosted 11 LTC pharmacy advocates to educate Congressional policymakers about concerns regarding the implementation of Section 3310 of the health reform legislation, which requires Medicare Part D Plans to implement the short cycle dispensing of medications in LTC settings. LTCPA advocates asked Congressional members to express concerns to CMS regarding patient safety and access to medications and the potential financial burden associated with implementation of the new dispensing requirements.
